Science project 5: Volcanic impact on surface climate (VolClim)

Science goals

The central goal of VolClim is to develop a conceptual frame work how volcanic eruptions influence tropical hydroclimate. This will help to provide estimates for future eruptions and to constrain the climate responses to eruptions that occurred before the instrumental period, for which knowledge is poor. The specific goals of VolClim will be addressed by following this pathway:
•    To understand the processes involved
•    To compare and to validate the model results with observations over the satellite period (including  Mt. Pinatubo and the small to moderate volcanic eruptions of the early 21th century)
•    To analyse the volcanic response dependent on the eruption characteristics and the background state of the ocean by using  statistical emulation
