Magnetic Microscopy with sub-picosecond resolution

Abstract:

High resolution magnetic microscopy has been used in the past to reveal fundamental dynamic processes in nanomagnets. Prime examples are linear and non-linear magnetization dynamics revealing e.g. the dynamic mode structure and ultimately precessional magnetic switching. Time resolved microscopy can also be used to investigate fundamental properties of the dynamic magnetization and the underlying magnetic energy landscape. Examples are the quantitative determination of spin transfer torque parameters, the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or the determination of the sign and magnitude of the spin Hall angle in thin film bilayer systems.
In this talk I will review recent examples of high resolution magneto-optical microscopy. I will present direct measurements of Snell’s law for spin waves.Furthermore I will demonstrate how spin waves can be used to extract fundamental parameters relevant for spintronics application. Finally, first time resolved movies of the switching process of magnetic nanostructures via the spin Hall effect will be presented.
